     new-logo-full-color-12kbJuly 6th,

In an A meet, there are a maximum of 792 points awarded.  In the individual races, 1st receives 6 points and the points decrease for 2nd place and so forth.  With this in mind, you can see how tough it was to lose week one by a mere 3 points!  Imagine if you will what it felt like to hear the announcer read the final score this past weekend at Woodley Gardens when he said “Westleigh 392, Woodley Gardens 399″.  Two losses by a total of 10 points!  But swim on we will!

Here are the topics for this week’s letter:

  1. Westleigh Records
  2.  IMPORTANT NOTICE
  3. This Week’s B Meet
  4. Kings Dominion Reminder
  5. Banquet information
  6. Westleigh vs. Quince Orchard on Saturday
  7. A Relay Carnival
  8. B Relay Carnival Deadline
  9. Pre-Team Follies

Week Five Newsletter

Last Wednesday saw the Barracudas in Germantown for the season’s first B meet.  The coaches were thrilled with the number of “Best Times” posted by Westleigh swimmers.

On Saturday, Westleigh hosted Germantown in the 2nd A meet of the 2009 season.  The result was a resounding win for the Barracudas!  The week ended on Saturday night with the parent’s social hosted by Jack & Joanna Devine.  To say that it was an overwhelming success would just simply not do it justice!  Our sincere thanks go out to our hosts and to Linda Mayo, our social director, for all of their hard work.  The only problem now is; how will they top it next year?  J

Here is what’s in store for us this week:

1)      Wednesday night “B” Meet @ Manchester Farm

2)      Best Times

3)      Ribbons

4)      Volunteer Requirements for B Meets

5)      Friday night social

6)      Westleigh @ Woodley Gardens

7)      Reimbursements

On Saturday, Westleigh headed east to Stonegate for the season’s first A meet.  Everyone knew that the top seeded Serpents would pose a formidable challenge.  As the meet unfolded, it became apparent that it was going to be a close one!  With just two events left, Mother Nature finally rolled in.  Heavy rain, thunder and lightning forced everyone to take cover for 45 minutes.  Word leaked out that Westleigh was hanging on to a one point lead at that time.  When the meet finally resumed, the tension on the pool deck was as thick as the humidity that still hung in the air.

The boys relay teams took 1st & 3rd which increased the lead to seven, but when Stonegate’s girls finished 1st & 2nd , the ten points they earned left the Barracuda short by a mere three points.

Congratulations to all our swimmers and thanks to the many parents who volunteered as officials and timers.

June 8th,

1)      Time Trials – June 13th   9:00am

What are Time Trials?

For our new parents and swimmers, Time Trials is an “internal meet” (Westleigh swimmers only).  The purpose of the meet is to allow all swimmers a chance to record times for the strokes that they can legally* swim.  These times are then used by the coaches to field the fastest swimmers in each gender-age group-stroke for the first A meet.  The times are also used as a starting point for all of the swimmers to gauge how much progress they have made during the season.

June 1st

This week’s email includes the following information:

1)      Parents’ Meetings – June 5th

2)    Practices

Parents’ Meetings:  This week we will host the second meeting for the parents of our swimmers.  If you missed the first meeting back on May 19th, this is your second chance.

On Friday, June 5th at 5:15pm the team reps and coaches will be available to talk with you about the summer 2009 season and to answer any questions that you might have about our Saturday and Wednesday night meets. Please take the time to attend and get us started on a positive track for the summer.

This meeting has been scheduled to coincide with practice, so that you can attend while the coaches look after your kids.

Practices:  Last week was a wet and stormy one!  Because of the 2009 calendar, we have an extra week of practice this year so we really didn’t miss all that much.  That said; please try to make as many practices as possible from this point forward.  I know that there are still many other obligations that we all have (soccer, baseball, etc…), but do your best.

Thanks,
