*Preteam will start Monday June 4th.

After Montgomery County schools let out (Beginning Wednesday June 13th)

Swim Team practice takes place every weekday morning for the summer. The Monday through Thursday schedule is as follows:

8:00-9:00 a.m. 10 and under

9:00-10:30 a.m. 11 and over

10:30-11:00 a.m. Preteam

The Friday practice for all age groups is 8:00-9:00 followed by Barracuda Challenge 9:00-10:00. There is no Friday practice for preteam; however, preteamers who can comfortably swim a full length of the pool can participate in Barracuda Challenge, a fun way to end a week of hard work.

There are alternate afternoon practices held 3 days per week for those swimmers who are unable to attend the regular morning practices. These practices are on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays 6:00-7:00 p.m. for swim team members and 7:00-7:30 p.m. for preteamers.

After coasting through a winter as warm as the one we just finished, it is not difficult to imagine sunny days on the Westleigh pool deck!

Ten weeks from yesterday and counting…..

It is a pleasure to be back as your A Rep. I look forward to a fun and exciting swim season. Our first order of business is to announce that the swim team will be hiring one new Junior Coach to our staff this summer. Interested applicants should send an email to me NO LATER than April 16th. In that email, please include a resume if you have one. In addition, the Swim Team Committee would like you to answer the following two questions:

What coaching experience do you currently possess?

Why do you want to be a coach for the Westleigh Swim Team?

Please note that you must be at least 15 years of age as of June 1st, 2012. Also note that this position begins on Tuesday May 29th and runs through July 29th. If you have any conflicts during that time, you must list them in your email response.

The victories continue! We are now 4-0 for the season! We arrived at Manchester Farm in glorious 80′s style this morning and we won our A meet today with a final score of WL 416.5 v MCF 375.5!
Congratulations to Thomas Finn! Thomas broke both the MCF pool record and our Westleigh team record with his 15-18 100 backstroke time of 1:00.35! Way to go Thomas!!

Andrew Gibson broke a few records today as well! His 13-14 Freestyle time of 26.05 broke our Westleigh team record. His 100 IM time of 1:04.18 also set a new Westleigh record. To top it all off, he tied the Westleigh 50 backstroke record with a time of 29.59…this record was set with the exact same time back in 2009…by his brother Matt! He also set a new MCF pool record with this event today. Congratulations Andrew!

Claudia Gibson set a new MCF pool record today also with a 11-12 50 free time of 30.47. Great Job Claudia!

Many of our swimmers achieved All-Star times today as well! Congrats to the following who achieved a total of 41 All-Star Times: David Arabshahi, Janel Berlinger, Emily Bolek, Katie Bolek, Jasmine Chang, Jeremy Chung, Brittany Dickerson, Thomas Finn, Kyle Foster (2.0), Andrew Gibson, Claudia Gibson, Sawyer Hazel, Jason Hu, Andrew Scher, Kevin Scher, Nikos Tragotsis, Julia Wang and Rebecca Weiss.

A few reminders: We are firmly entrenched in what we realistically call “hell week” (even though it is really 2 weeks long!). We have a lot going on in the last few weeks of the season. We can check today’s A meet off the list, but now we move on to the following:

* Tomorrow, July 10 we travel to Quince Orchard for our A Relay Carnival. If you have a swimmer in this meet, I will be resending the particulars again shortly. If you don’t have a swimmer in the meet, please try to come by to cheer and support the team. Relays are always very exciting, and you won’t want to miss the event of the season…the parents and coaches relays! Come out to cheer on Eileen Foster, Martie McLaughlin, Curtis Carlson and Paul Pykosh as they represent Westleigh in the 100 meter freestyle parents relay and our coaches Allie, Emily, Bobby and Eric as they show their stuff in the 100 medley coaches relay. Always a fun time

* Monday, July 11, we are hosting the B Relays. The lineup for this meet is now posted at the pool. An email will be coming from Jenny and Sheila with info on arrival times, etc for that meet.

* Tuesday, July 12 we have several swimmers entered in the MCSL Invitational Long Course Meet.

* Wednesday, July 13 is our B Meet @ MCF.

* Friday, July 15 is our social.

* Saturday, July 16 is our final home A meet v Woodley Gardens. We will recognize our graduating seniors at half time…bring your tissues.

* Sunday, July 17 we are hosting our annual Mini Meet.

* Wednesday, July 20 is the Superstars meet at Germantown.

* Friday, July 22 is our final social.

* Saturday, July 23 we are hosting our Divisioanl Championship meet.

* Sunday, July 24 is our Team Banquet at the Washingtonian Marriott. ( Be sure to turn in your form and check by July 19)

* Saturday, July 30 is All Star Relays.

* Sunday, July 31 is All Star Individuals.

PHEW!

Our annual team trip is scheduled for Tuesday, July 5. The cost is only $38 per person and includes admission to the park as well as bus transportation on a luxury Peter Pan bus! This annual Barracuda tradition is a really fun family day. King’s Dominion has something for all ages from preschool to adult. Kiddie rides, thrilling roller coasters, amazing water park. From daredevils to the less-adventurous among us, we all have a blast! This trip will be one of your family’s favorite swim team memories. The sign up sheet will be posted on our team bulletin board at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, June 17 (picture day). This trip is always very popular so we ask that you do not sign up until you are sure you can go. Full payment will be required within 48 hours of signing up – anyone not paid in that time frame will need to be removed from the list to allow as many families to go as possible. Checks should be made out to Westleigh Swim Team and placed in the Hazel folder.

Ideally, at least one parent from each family will join us. If this is not possible, each child under age 13 must have a chaperone who is at least 16 years old – this chaperone must be responsible for the child for the duration of the trip. If you are signing your under 13 child up to go, you must note who the responsible guardian is and they must also be paid in full within 48 hours of sign up.

We will meet at Westleigh at 7:00 a.m. with the bus departing at 7:30 a.m. sharp. We will leave King’s Dominion at 8 p.m. and arrive back at Westleigh around 9:30 p.m. Families that wish to drive themselves or carpool with another family may do so. Just contact Stephanie Hazel to purchase tickets (still $38) rather than putting your name on the sign up sheet. Parking passes are available for $8 per car. There are a limited number of tickets available.
